A 41-year-old teacher identified as Brian Keith Castillo passed away just before dawn on Monday, May 19th, in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye. According to reports, Castillo was involved in a golf cart incident in the San Pedrito Area. He was visiting the island and had been involved in a volleyball tournament held the day before, on Sunday, May 18th.

On Saturday, May 17th, Selvin Sealy Jr., 32, was laid to rest in San Pedro Town. The island resident died in police custody after he was apprehended for trespassing on private property south of San Pedro earlier in the week. While family members are questioning the circumstances surrounding his death, police on the island say the matter is under investigation, and a file has been submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for further advice.

The United Democratic Party (UDP) is continuing efforts to move forward amidst internal challenges. The party, which currently holds five seats in the House of Representatives, recently saw the official swearing-in of the Honorable Tracy Panton as the first female Leader of the Opposition. Dr. John Briceño remains hopeful that Belize may still access the five-year, US$125 million grant initially secured through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a United States government agency.
